The setting is part of the memory

A portrait can describe more than what someone looks like. A doorway, a long corridor or a towering window can tell us how a place felt. Keeping those elements in the frame gives the photograph a sense of scale and lets the people belong to their surroundings.

Negative space is not empty

Darkness and open space give the eye somewhere to rest. They can make a small gesture feel more intimate or a pool of light feel more extraordinary. The couple does not need to fill the frame for the connection to be the subject.

Direction with a purpose

For these photographs, small decisions matter: where to stand, how to turn toward the light, when to move. The direction should be clear and brief, leaving space for a real expression or an unplanned gesture to complete the frame.
